FRIDAY BREAKFAST

Many of the Friday swimmers have coffee together.  Through the winter they  meet at The Rivi - 10.30-Noon.  Just come along - even if you have missed the swimming session.

NEW YEAR'S EVE

The Oasis pool will be open until noon.

If you are planning to get fitter by swimmning next year, come along on New Years Eve about 9.30am  for a leisurely swim and wake up on New Years Day knowing that you have already made a start on your new years resolution.

END OF YEAR CHALLENGES

Two Friday Swimmers completed their first T30- both demonstrating emphatically that they have greatly improved their fitness levels this year. Well done both of you.

Looking ahead to next year:
we will be having regular T30 challenges
    and
we will be looking at ways of accommodating those who do not want to swim lengths, but want to exercise in the water.

End of Year Challenges

If anyone wants to join me  in the  British Swimming  T-30 challenge again, meet me at the pool in time to start swimming at 8.30 OR 9.30am this Friday, 2nd December.
This is a great way to check and see how far you have progressed this year, and there's still time to improve by 31st December when we repeat the T-30.

T-30 = number of lengths you  swim in 30mins.  Can't remember who actually did this last year, but if you did, you will know what your current T-30 is.

Aim is to swim to your maximum ability - not go dead slow this month and then go like a rocket on 31st December!

OLYMPIC TICKET OFFERS

The Times Group (Times, Sunday Times, Sun)  newspapers are running a 'text to win' competition for tickets to 2012 Olympic swimming events.

I have no idea what the cost of the text is, so do check, it probably includes a donation to the 2012 Team fund.

If you swim more than 20 lengths and want to increase your distance, time and style, there is a swimmer who would like a training buddy on Wednesday evenings 6.30pm.  Idea is to meet and encourage each other.  Contact me at swimselsey@yahoo.co.uk

Now is the time to get down to our local pool.  The Groggles have gone, and the pool is wonderfully quiet.

No one signed up for the 10 Week Challenge.
If anyone is interested, and comes forward, this will be launched again in January.

TIDES THIS WEEK

The current sea temperature is 17oC.  Although the temperature has not dropped since mid June, the prevailing winds this week will make for some rougher sea conditions, and it will feel cold when you leave the water.  If you are open water swimming this week, do wear a bright orange or red hat so that you can be spotted in the dips in-between the waves.

PRESS RELEASE

Below is a copy of the press release from the RNLI detailing the success of this years' fundraising during Lifeboat Week. Fantastic!  Well done everyone who worked so hard to make this a record breaking year.

6 September                                                                                       Selsey 43 2011

Selsey lifeboat week delivers record results

In its 150th anniversary year Selsey RNLIs lifeboat week has broken all previous records with the various fundraising events delivering a whopping £18,272.44 after expenses. On behalf of the Selsey RNLI Branch, Chairman John Light commented: “That such a fantastic response by the public makes all the hard work planning, organising and delivering the events by everyone involved so worthwhile.”

Although this year’s lifeboat week events followed a similar pattern to previous years as it was the 150th anniversary it was very gratifying that the ‘best laid plans’ did actually bear fruit and that the weather was kind for all the outdoor activities.

There were a few particular highlights worthy of mention including: soldier Anthony Reed’s marriage proposal to Fran McGill via a banner on Selsey’s all weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker during the sail past prior to his deployment in Afghanistan; a balloon (from the balloon race) reaching Trier in Germany (!) and the attendance of the RNLIs latest slipway launched Tamar class all weather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams from Bembridge, Isle of Wight.

Once again a very big thank you to everyone for coming along and taking part and for the very generous donations received on behalf of the RNLI.

CONGRATULATIONS

... to Roger Allsop who became the oldest person to swim the English Channel.  He is 70. Brilliant!

You too could swim the equivalent of the English Channel.  Why not set yourself a target of swimming the Channel  lane-by-lane in The Oasis pool.   It is 21 miles, or 1344 lengths.  If you did 30 lengths a week it would take only 44 weeks.  Less than a year - what are you waiting for!

WHAT DO LIFEBOATS DO IN A YEAR?

A couple of years ago Selsey Lifeboat Station had to fall in-line with national RNLI policy and stop firing a maroon every time a lifeboat is launched from the station.  Fortunately, via word-of-mouth and local papers, we know that the lifeboats at Selsey are kept busy throughout the year. But have you ever wondered what the RNLI do nationally in one year? At their AGM in May they published the folowing figures, it makes interesting reading.

3,230                 Lifeboats launched in times of darkness
1,958,581         Preventative actions taken
17,320             Children learned safety messages in the
'Beach in the City' education programme
8,313                People rescued by lifeboat crews - that's an
                             average of 23 per day.
10,758             Hours lifeboat volunteers spent saving lives at sea
£7 million        RNLI Christmas cards sold through its shops
and enough rock to cover 131 lengths of an
Olympic  Size swimming pool - no I didn't
                           eat them all!
15                  Launches on Christmas Day - do hope their dinners
                         were kept hot for them.

Information is taken from the latest edition of 'The Lifeboat', and this also includes a fascinating account of a harrowing launch that Hayling Island undertook in March of this year.

If anyone would like me to pass on my copies of 'The Lifeboat' to them, please email me.

WHEN TO WEAR A WETSUIT

If you are open water swimming when should you wear a wetsuit?  Regular open water swimmers would say year round, but there are guide lines for those who only like the occasional summer dip.  These guidelines are often mandatory in open water competitions.

If the water temperature is:

Over 22oC - don't wear a wetsuit, you will get VERY hot, banned in open water competitions

14oC-22oC - optional

Below 14oC - wetsuit advised, or compulsory for open water competitions

THE OASIS THIS WEEK

LIFEBOAT IN ACTION

10 July 2011                                                                                        Selsey 29 2011

Broken down angling boat Lesley Ann given assistance

Selsey RNLI all weather lifeboat (ALB) Voluntary Worker launched at 7.30am to go to the assistance of a 10 metre angling boat the Lesley Ann broken down with two men on board approximately 3.5 miles southeast of Bognor Regis.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 7.47am to find that the two anglers had been fishing all night and when they came to start their engine to return home the Lesley Ann’s batteries were flat. Without power they were also unable to recover the boat’s anchor, which became the first task for the volunteer lifeboat crew using Voluntary Worker’s capstan. A towline was then secured between the ALB and Lesley Ann and a course set for the casualty’s home port of Littlehampton.

As Littlehampton lifeboat was due to launch on exercise and having heard the radio conversation between Selsey lifeboat crew and the anglers they offered to tow the Lesley Ann from the harbour entrance up river to the Littlehampton Marina.

At 8.35am just outside Littlehampton Harbour the tow was passed from Voluntary Worker to Littlehampton lifeboat. Selsey lifeboat was then released to return to station at 8.39am arriving back by 9.19am.

If you swim in the sea or pool alot, you may benefit from a body scrub once a week. Don't go to a salon or buy expensive scrubs, try this home recipe.  Costs less than £2 and lasts a couple of months and leaves your skin smooth and moisterised.

1 x 350g tub coarse sea salt (79p Waitrose)
1 x 350g  tub fine sea salt (79p Waitrose)
1 tblsp  your favourite shower gel
Few drops of your favourite aromatherapy oil OR  1 tsp olive oil

Just mix the ingredients all together and put into a plastic tub (1 litre ice cream tub is ideal) and keep handy in the shower.

JUNIOR WARDENS VISIT LIFEBOAT

1 July2011

Junior community wardens visit Selsey lifeboat station

Selsey Community Wardens’, Gareth Jones and Jay Blackwood, brought a small group of junior community wardens from Seal School to visit the RNLI lifeboat station in Selsey.
The junior community wardens all appeared fascinated by both the inshore (Betty and Thomas Moore) and all weather (Voluntary Worker) lifeboats, and showed great interest by asking a variety of questions. Mike Valmas (Selsey Lifeboat Station Admin. Officer) commented: “It shows a lot of dedication on the part of leaders of groups such as this and they deserve our thanks for introducing youngsters to be responsible local citizens.”
The Selsey junior community warden scheme, working in partnership with Seal School and the community wardens, aims to raise environmental, social, and community awareness among the children. The objective is to work with young people, helping promote responsible citizenship in order to benefit their communities. It also links in practical events with curriculum subjects such as citizenship, and personal, social and health education.
Youngsters taking part work with the community wardens on various supervised projects, such as:
·         Helping with neighbourhood clean-ups.
·         Cycle safety training.
·         Sport and team building activities.
·         Developing projects that bring together older and younger generations.
They also take part in events and activities that help them develop trust and teamwork and understand important social issues, through individual and group challenges.

LIFEBOAT LAUNCHED

 3 July 2011

Assistance provided to yacht ‘Nenriki’ becalmed and drifting with a fouled propeller

Selsey RNLI all weather lifeboat Voluntary Worker launched at 7.30am to assist the 29 foot yacht ‘Nenriki’ becalmed and drifting with a fouled propeller approximately 2 miles south south-east of the lifeboat station.

The lifeboat was on scene at 7.44am and discovered that the two crew members (a father and son) had unsuccessfully been trying to remove a plastic sack which had become entangled around the propeller. In the flat calm and clear water conditions it was easy to see the offending piece of plastic.

Four of the lifeboat crew went aboard the yacht, and along with the father and son positioned themselves on the bow, which had the desired effect of lifting the propeller almost clear of the water. Another lifeboat crewman working from Voluntary Worker’s inflatable dinghy was then able to reach under the propeller and remove the plastic sack.

By 8.14am the propeller was cleared and Nenriki’s skipper trialled his propulsion equipment which proved to be undamaged. The lifeboat crew then returned to Voluntary Worker and at 8.19am the yacht and crew continued on their passage to Brighton Marina.

The lifeboat then returned to station arriving back at 9.40am and was once again made ready for service by 10am.

·         For photos and videos of Selsey RNLI lifeboat and crew visit the RNLI Press Centre at www.rnli.org.uk/press

All home, safe and sound, that's what we like to here!  Well done to all at Selsey Lifeboat Station.

UPDATE Aqua Monday 4th July

This class WILL be running.  Kate will be covering for Mel.

9am - The Oasis

Great to see more people at Kate's class this morning (Wednesay).  Anyone preparing their excuses for not coming to aqua next Monday, (Wednesday or Thursday) forget it.  Kate ran her class this morning in her usual professional and energetic style, despite a couple of broken ribs and other injuries. Unless you have your leg in plaster, 'I've twisted my knee/ankle/neck' just won't cut it anymore!

WATERPROOF WATCHES

If you are considering buying a 'waterproof' watch, here are a few points to bare in mind:

  • there is no such thing as a waterPROOF watch, watches can only be water RESISTANT to certain depths/pressures
  • the ATM rating relates to the STATIC pressure underwater a watch can tolerate. e.g. 3ATM = 30 metres. BUT this does not take account of  rapid, repeated contact with water e.g. swimming.
  • The minimum recommended ATM for swimming is 5ATM = 50 metres
  • 3ATM = occasional contact with water (shower, washing up)
  • *5 ATM = pool swimming to a maximum of water depth 2 metres
  • 10 ATM = open water swimming, snorkelling
  • 20+ ATM = diving
  • Choose a larger faced watch, water will slightly distort the hands and numbers.
*In my experience, any 5ATM watch I have had has not proved to be adequate for regular pool swimming. I would recommend a minimum of 10 ATM.

MULBERRY DIVERS

Did you know that Mulberry Divers stocks items for swimmers too?  They stock:

Swim Goggles and Masks
Ear Clear
Waterproof Boots and Shoes
Wetsuits  ...  and a lot more.

You can find them at East Beach Shops.  They are very helpful and happy to share the considerable knowledge they have of the waters around Selsey.

Visit their website at:   www.mulberrydivers.co.uk.

You never know, you may be tempted to give diving a try. You would be surprised at what lives in, and lies on, the seabed around the Manhood Peninsular.

BRITISH WOMEN SETS WORLD RECORD

47 year old Penny Palfrey today set a new world record when she completed a 67 mile unassisted ocean swim between two Cayman Islands.  That is equivalent to 4288 lengths of  The Oasis Short Distance 25 metre pool - only Penny was swimming in shark infested waters!

Sea Swimming This Week

Swim with a rising or slack tide, best time to swim is an hour either side of high tide.   Take care if you are getting out of the water down by the West Street Coastguard Ramp, the rising tide can hurl you towards the breakwater on the west side of the ramp.

Current sea temperature    13oC

TIDE TIMES THIS WEEK

With a full moon on   the 15th June,   spring tides will start to race from Tuesdays' evening tide. For times.........

NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The National Swimming Championships start on  Tuesday. You can get live updates and follow events on Twitter and Facebook.  The competitors will be doing their best to impress as they try to qualify for places in Team GB for next years London Olympics.

CONGRATULATIONS

Many congratulations to David Sparkes, British Swimming and ASA Chief Executive for receiving an OBE in the Birthday Honours list for his dedication to developing swimming in Britain.

The BIG SPLASH

British Swimming and the BBC are getting together to try and get everyone in the UK into the water.  The Big Splash is an event that is running over 10 months, and you can find out more details at:

http://www.swimming.org/bigsplash/what

The emphasis is on fun, so why not leap in and lark about with the children/grand children, or have a quiet relaxing time in a pool on your own.  Whatever floats your boat!

Sadly our local pool at The Oasis is not involved, but Butlins in Bognor is and so are these pools. For local pools taking part

MUSIC MUSIC

If you teach aqua, I know it's not easy tailoring  the music to suit the pupil demographics.   Here is one useful site I  found.

If you go to a class and find the music boring or uninspiring, tell your tutor.  Tutors can't know what pupils would prefer if no one tells them.  Does anyone remember the classes that Clare used to run at the old pool in Selsey (where The Oasis now stands)?  It was cold and dark, the roof leaked and the pool was breaking up under our feet, but with the music mix that Clare played we never wanted to get out of the water.

Thanks Kate for the 80s mix last Wednesday, it was fun.
