BRITAINS AQUATIC CENTRE OLYMPIC PARK STRATFORD

It was a wonderful experience to visit the Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park at Stratford.
The journey was easy, and inside and outside of the Olympic Park there are lots of marshals ready and willing to help and point you in the right direction.  The security screening is well organised and I sailed through in minutes.  (I don't  mind how long good security screening takes!).

Once in the centre, again there were lots of volunteers giving directions and welcoming people to the centre.  We Brits are going to have to get used to being approached and welcomed, it's a wonderfully refreshing change.  When leaving, again all the staff and volunteers asked if I had had a good time, was there anything they could do to help me get back to the station  etc.  It was more user friendly than Disney World. :-)

It is less than 10 minutes walk from the train to the Olympic Park, and there is a bus shuttle between the Park and the main entrance to the station.  Immediately beside the Olympic Park is the Westfield Centre, with many shops, cinemas, and restaurants serving food from around the world. I can recommend the Vietnamese food from Poh in the Food Court.

Many of the competitors opted to use the main pool to warm up so we were treated to a master class in every stroke.  The sense of anticpation built up and then came the all important Finals and Semi Finals.

Aimme Willmott's family were sitting behind us and shouted themselves hoarse as she swam the race of her life to qualify for the Olympic team.  Tears all round as everyone shared in the emotion that saw the culmination of years of hard work and dedication from Aimee and her family.

Then came the qualifying races for the competitors for the Paralympics.   Inspirational performances from some wonderful young athletes.

The whole experience of attending the British Swimming Championships is one I shall never forget - and I am lucky enough to be going again next Friday.

London 2012 Bring it on!!!  I have my flag ready and I've already seen how great Team GB are going to be.

AQUA CLASSES

Mel's aqua classes will now be limited to a maximum of 20 pupils. Last Monday some people were turned away.

With the new equipment and Mel's efforts to make sure she provides the kind of class her pupils want, it is no wonder they are proving so popular.

Classes start at 9am on Monday and Wednesday, so don't leave it until the very last minute before turning up.  You should be fine if you get to The Oasis about 10 to 9.

The limit on numbers is for insurance purposes and also so that all pupils have room to work out.

BRITS BRING HOME THE GOLD - AGAIN

Five gold medals for our British swimmers on the opening day of the Championships in Melbourne.

Find out more at   http://www.swimming.org/britishswimming/news/swimming/five-medals-melbourne/12209/

I haven't checked this, but I think our swimmers must be the most successful sports men and women in the country, how many other sports consistently bring home gold medals?

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New Year to all swimmers.  And what a year it is going to be. Plenty to help you make more of your swimming in 2012.

I kicked off 2012 by dipping into the water at West Sands.  It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be, but there were some rather large waves (2 mtrs) and I didn't stay in long. But I did it! I am still trying to work out if I was brave or stupid, bit of both I expect.

In March the British Championships will be held in the new Aquatics Centre and Team GB will be announced in early April.  I will put seperate posts on the blog giving details of any news.  I am going to some of the heats and three nights of finals.  If anyone else is going, let me know, perhaps we can meet up.

Keep up with British Swimmers at http://www.swimming.org/britishswimming/

Aqua classes are back to normal at The Oasis, as are  Seal Island Swimming Sessions.

A Selsey Seniors Swimming Challenge will be launched to start in early February.  More details will be posted next week.

NATIONAL SWIMATHON  - This year the Swimathon  will take place in late April and  Marie Curie have teamed up with the Big Splash to enable swimmers to support either Marie Curie or Sports Relief (or both ).   A couple of people have said they are interested in putting together a Selsey Team so contact me or Mike or email   swimselsey@yahoo.co.uk  I would love to hear from anyone who would like to take up this challenge, which will involve you swimming whatever distance you want to aim for 2 lengths to 200.
